Charlotte Daily Short: Body Worlds Exhibit at Discovery Place Charlotte Worth Admission

I took a step outside of my comfort zone this weekend and spent Valentine's Day at Discovery Place Charlotte touring Gunther von Hagens' BODY WORLD & The Cycle of Life exhibit.

Whether you think you have any interest in human anatomy or not, you do have a body consisting of a brain and other organs, muscles, tendons, nerves and bones.

What this exhibit does so beautifully is it displays real human bodies using a process called plastination to preserve individual organs and tissues after they have been removed from the deceased's body, and it poses them in such a way that beautifully reveals the simple complexity of the human form.

I found the most interesting models to be those in action, including a baseball player in the final stages of swinging a bat, a pair of hockey players colliding, and a runner with each of his muscles peeled back to reveal underlying muscles, nerves, tendons and various fibers.

The exhibit takes about an hour to go through if you truly look at every display and it is well worth the price of admission.

The current exhibit runs from November 21, 2015 until May 1, 2016 and costs $24 for non-members of the museum and $12 for Discovery Place members.  I recommend purchasing your tickets online so you don't have to wait in line.

Discovery Place Charlotte has several additional exhibits and interactive displays which are educational and entertaining for children and adults of all ages.

Five Ways To Show Your Home Love This Valentine's Day

St. Valentine's Day is quickly approaching and will arrive this Sunday, February 14, 2016.

If you've waited until now to decide how you are going to express your love to your significant other, you may have already waited too long.

However, your house doesn't care about silly things like receiving cards, flowers, and chocolates on Hallmark's favorite holiday.

Here are a few things you can do to show your home some extra love this week, this month, or just sometime this year.

1.  Pressure wash and Paint.  Nothing says "I love you" like giving your home a fresh bath and dressing it up with some makeup.

See what a difference pressure washing your home can make on its appearance.

Rent a pressure washer from the local hardware store or hire a professional to make your dingy home sparkle.

If your home is clad in wood or hardboard, consider giving it a fresh coat of paint in a color that really pops, like slate blue with white trim or straw and sage.

2.  Hire a professional cleaning service.  Sure, you clean your home constantly.

You mop and vacuum the floors, wipe down the counters, and dust off the fans at least once a week.

But when was the last time you gave your home a long, deep scrub?

It's kind of like when your spouse gives you a massage vs. receiving a professional, deep tissue massage.

Your spouse hits the surface areas, but the professional reaches every nook, cranny, and crevice.

3.  Decorate with new furniture.  You don't necessarily need to spend a fortune on new furniture to change the look of a room.

Give a room a vintage look with a dresser like this one painted "Chesapeake Blue."

Add an accent chair to a barren corner of your family room.  Or pick up an antique dresser at a garage sale or second-hand shop.

Furniture doesn't necessarily need to be new, just "new to you," to compliment and complete a room that was just missing a final piece.

4.  Build a hardscape.  Outdoor living space is just as important as indoor living space for many homeowners in the Carolinas.

Build a new cobblestone patio or upgrade your existing one.  Fire pits and outdoor fireplaces remain very popular among homeowners.

Can you see how this will improve your life?
Even a well-positioned bird bath or koi pond can make a huge difference in the appearance of -- and the enjoyment you receive from -- your backyard.

5.  Update your kitchen and / or master bath.  There are two reasons to update these two important rooms.

First, you'll get enjoyment out of having a kitchen and master bathroom you can be proud of.

Secondly, these are the two rooms with the most impact on resale home prices in your entire house.

What can tile and marble do for you?  Even granite is
considered standard counter top material these days.
Today's buyers want to move into new or "like new" homes, and studies show these two rooms have more impact on your home's value than any other room in the house.

Just don't expect to get an immediate dollar-for-dollar return on your upgrades as these are also two of the costliest rooms to improve.

Give me a call if you ever need a reference for a great contractor in your area or for more ideas on how to show your home some Valentine's Day love.

Video: Allen Tate Company's Carolinas Market Update with President and CEO, Pat Riley - January/February 2016

Allen Tate President and CEO, Pat Riley, discusses what's in store for the Carolinas' real estate market in 2016.

New home construction continues to be on the rise, but prices will increase with the higher cost of building supplies and materials.

Interest rates, Riley projects, could increase as high as two-percent between now and the end of the year, slowing the rapid increase in resale home prices.

Finally, Riley predicts a bullish housing market at all price points and he shares that both Charlotte and Raleigh areas are each rated among the nation's best real estate markets.

Contact me directly for more information about the local real estate market, or to decide what you need to do to be ready to buy or sell a home and if now is the right time for you.

Charlotte Daily Short: NFL's Panthers Complete Historic Season, Make Carolinas Proud Despite Super Bowl 50 Loss

What a great season for the Carolina Panthers.  Historically great, in fact.

The Charlotte-based NFC South Champions finished the NFL's 2015 season with the league's best regular season record, 15-1.

Carolina became the sixth team to complete a 15-1 regular season.  Only the 2007 New England Patriots won sixteen regular season games in one season.

The Panthers finished the NFL Playoffs with two more wins on the season at 17-2 than their closest challenger, the 15-4 Super Bowl Champion, Denver Broncos.

Their seventeen combined regular season and Playoffs wins ties them with the 1972 Miami Dolphins (17-0) for the fourth most wins in a single season.

Unfortunately, Carolina came up short in its quest for the Super Bowl 50 title, losing 24-10 to the Broncos in the franchise's second ever Super Bowl appearance.

If the Black & Blue are anything like the Orange Crush, they should earn an opportunity to vindicate their Super Bowl loss in short order.

Stronger Fan Base

The Panthers ignited a spark among the local fan base and in the City of Charlotte this season which will last long beyond the playing days of Cam Newton, Luke Kuechly, and Thomas Davis.

The Carolinas' team earned a national following in 2015, spending as much time in the sports headlines for their dabbing and dancing as for their winning ways.

Panthers players also captured the attention and the hearts of countless fans throughout North and South Carolina, across the nation, and around the world with their big personalities and the famed "Sunday Giveaway," a tradition in which at least 53 young Panthers fans received a football from Newton or one of his teammates after scoring a touchdown.

In many ways, the Panthers are the new face of American sports, with a Hispanic head coach, a young African-American quarterback, and a curly-headed middle linebacker with a female following to rival Derek Jeter's in his prime.

This team is comprised of a diverse group of men who came together for a common cause.

Keep Pounding

The 2015 season may be over, but preparations for 2016 will likely begin in a matter of days, if they haven't already.

There are important free agents like Josh Norman to ink to long-term deals as soon as possible.

There is the NFL Scouting Combine in February and college "Pro Days" to attend and evaluate prospects in the next couple of months.

Finally, Carolina will attempt to fill some of its biggest needs in the 2016 NFL Draft at the end of April.

Carolina may have come up short on the biggest stage, but there is plenty of room to grow and plenty of reason for optimism for Panthers fans, players, and coaches.

I expect the Panthers to "Keep Pounding" in 2016, all the way to a Super Bowl victory.

After all, Super Bowl LI (51) is the "Keep Pounding" Super Bowl.

Sam Mills must have worn No. 51 for a reason.

Where are Americans moving?  To the Carolinas, of course!

According to United Van Lines's "National Movers Study," South Carolina (No. 2) and North Carolina (No. 5) were both among the top five inbound moving states in America.

Raleigh (No. 4) and Charlotte (No. 9) were both among the top ten fastest growing cities in the nation in 2014.

Oregon was the top-rated inbound state for the third year in a row.

Charlotte Daily Short: How The Invention of Air Conditioning Changed The South and The Belmont Man Who Coined The Term

Belmont's Stuart Cramer.
Did you know the term "air conditioning" was invented in the shadows of Charlotte, North Carolina?

Belmont's Stuart Cramer, an engineer who designed air-cooling and humidification systems, actually coined the term "air conditioning" in a patent he filed using the name in 1905.

Willis Carrier, an industrious 25-year old engineer, actually invented the world's first air-cooling and humidification system while working at Buffalo Forge Company in 1902.

The first Carrier air conditioning system was used at a Brooklyn, New York printing company in 1902 and the Charlotte area's first such system was installed in 1906 at The Chronicle Mills about 15 miles west of the Queen City in Belmont.

Carrier's invention was designed to regulate the temperature and humidity levels of cotton in the cotton mill as it had done for Sackett & Wilhelm's Lithography and Printing Company up North.

However, it did not take long for the mill workers in the Charlotte mills to recognize and appreciate another practical use of this invention.  Comfort!

Air conditioning has undoubtedly played a significant role in the great migration of the U.S. population to the South.

Can you imagine suffering through an entire summer anywhere between North Carolina and Texas without air conditioning?  No, thank you!

The thought is nearly as unbearable as enduring an entire summer without a drop of sweet iced tea.

Cramer was Carrier's biggest competition in the field and he is remembered today in his home county of Gaston, North Carolina as the namesake of the Town of Cramerton and Cramer Mountain Golf Club.
